As GPS Tracking Devices Get Smaller, Applications Increase

Lower Power Consumption and Size Reign Supreme

Privacy Matters More than Ever

It is inevitable:  You will be tracked via GPS tracking devices and the main concern will be privacy.  Fastrax has launched their smallest GPS receiver for navigation and asset tracking.  They say that it takes up about half the space of their earlier module which allows it to be sealed in tiny casings.  How small?  Try 10.4 x 14.0 x 2.3 mm; which allows integration into most battery powered consumer devices.

Size Matters

Why is size so important in this market?  Here are the main reasons:

Lower power consumption.  With lithium ion batteries, the GPS tracking devices that are developed with this component will be able to stay online and active for days between charges.  That is, as long as the device is dedicated to GPS functions.  This means that less time spent on a charger means more time spent on the task at hand; tracking things.  The one downfall of GPS tracking devices is that their size and power requirements are just beyond the stage of being useless.  Yes, even some of the devices that boast a number of days between recharges often find that real-world uses demand more recharges than originally planned.  It’s that way with cell phones, too.

Increased ability for concealment.  Being able to hide these devices is a sure way to catch criminals and track shipments around the world.  They can be hidden inside of product packaging and unless there is a device that can detect them, remain completely concealed while being in contact with a tracking system.  Cargo, freight and trucking operations will all be able to relax in knowing that shipments will begin to arrive at their destinations with little to no thought about the possibility of being stolen.

Increased integration with other devices.  With small size and power requirements comes the chance to be able to be retrofitted inside of devices like cell phones, radios and other electronic devices.

The Main Concern

Privacy concerns remain.  There are still those who value their privacy to the point of being exceptionally wary of these kinds of devices.  Their concerns are well founded, because if these fall into the wrong hands and are used for devious purposes, liberty and freedom could become a thing of the past.

That’s why there must be a balance struck between the good and bad that GPS tracking devices bring to our society.  Those who use them must be held accountable for their actions and activities.  Those who are tracked must be confident that they will not be used in an illegal manner to gain an advantage against them.  It’s going to be interesting to see how this all plays out in the coming months and years.
