At Last – Some Sanity Applied in Police Pursuits
Will This Reduce Injuries and the Risk of Serious Crashes?
Public Safety Gets Consideration
It was just a matter of time before someone invented a way to continue a police pursuit without ‘pushing’ the driver to go faster and faster. The nature of police chases places innocent people in harm’s way.
So, how do we stop these insanely unsafe chases and still apprehend the perpetrators?
One new method is being tried in several countries including the United States and Australia. This technology is called the StarChase system and it uses a rather unconventional method in vehicle pursuit situations.
Instead of continuing a high speed chase on city streets and highways, a police car fires out a GPS Tracking device that attaches to the vehicle being pursued and allows police to back off and follow at a distance that is safer for the public and the drivers of the vehicle that is being chased.
Public Safety Issue. The most often heard cry from those who oppose high speed chases is that the public is put at too high of a risk. This is witnessed time and again on reality TV shows that chronicle these events in graphic detail. Too many pursuits end up in a horrific crash rather than a peaceful apprehension of the suspects. When you consider the amount of injury that can be imposed onto innocent victims, the sheer cost of police pursuits is much too high.
Catching the Perpetrators Remains Top Priority. Police do not give up easily when they are in pursuit and it turns into a high-speed chase. This is especially true for those chases that involve suspects who have tried to harm an officer of the law. Police become almost rabid during the hunt and the thought of pulling back and acknowledging that they will get their man later is unheard of in these cases. Plus, as it continues on, the stakes get higher, the adrenaline rushes faster, and often, common sense goes out the door.
Less Chance of Accidents and Injury. With this new system, the chase can be pulled back after one of these devices is fired onto the fleeing suspect’s vehicle. The beauty of this system is that in order to rid the car of the device, the perpetrators would have to stop which would give pursuing police the extra time they would need to surround them and stop them from going further.
Also, this device sends a message to those fleeing their pursuers:Â you will NOT get away from police no matter how fast or slow you drive (or where you go).
Some sane and sound reasoning went into the development of this device. Another great thing is that it can be re-used. When applied and used correctly, GPS Tracking can win the day and help keep all of the participants and the public safer. It just makes good sense.
