Something fishy is going on in the refuse department in Vadodara, India.
An internal investigation by the city’s governing council, the Vadodara Municipal Corporation, (VMC) seems to indicate that the independent contractors hired to do garbage pickup are padding their wallets by weighing down their loads. The fleet management supervisor proposes to install GPS tracking systems on municipal trucks in an effort to solve the problem.
Vadodara is one of the biggest cities in the Indian state of Guyjarat. It has a population estimated at 1.6 million, and a high industrial base, mostly in chemicals and pharmaceuticals. Garbage pickup is a high priority service in such a densely-populated area. Residents and business owners are not pleased when garbage day passes and their receptacles go untouched. (more…)

GPS Tracking Systems Help Senior ‘Road Warriors’ Stay Connected to Family
This winter was a good one for recreational vehicle parks located in warm weather climates. A national chain of RV parks called Equity Lifestyle Properties reported a 16.5 percent increase in revenue this winter over last.
The difference is an increase in snowbird campers, said the National Association of RV Parks and Campgrounds.
There are three general categories of RVers: vacationers, part-timers and full-timers. The quickest growing group of these three is the full-timers. These are people who live in their RVs nearly all 52 weeks of the year. A majority of them sell their brick-and-mortar homes. They give up a permanent address for a license plate number. (more…)

There are some among us who are habitually punctual and keep to a schedule with military-like precision. Put one of these perfectionists on the road and frustration ensues. A pokey driver, road construction or rush hour can throw a monkey wrench in a perfectly-planned day.
For even the most easy-going of drivers, school buses are a source of irritation on the roadways. God bless them, we wouldn’t want to hurt a hair on the heads of those sweet passengers. But boy, do those bus drivers add precious minutes to our commutes to work.
Now, a study in Great Britain proves what working folk have been suspecting for years: average travel times are longer when schools are in session. (more…)

We have heard of some businesses that are avoiding the acquisition of GPS Fleet Tracking systems for their fleet operations because of the price tag. Furthermore, these companies have adopted systems that are based on smart phone technology in an effort to supply additional functionality to fleet operations in the filing and managing of paperwork required in the trucking industry.
While on the surface this seems like a good move, in fact, there is one major problem with the use of technology in this way:

GPS Tracking
A savvy taxicab company owner operating in trendy Solando County, CA is winning an advantage over his competition by offering quick response times due to vehicle tracking technology.
Shawn Puri, who owns California Taxicab, wants to expand his service from Vallejo to neighboring Benicia. A possible problem is that Benicia, a quaint waterside city, has an area of only 12 square miles and by many accounts is already well-served by taxis. (more…)

A motorist tracks a speeding bus. New players in the car track market are offering prices as low as Sh15,000 to cover a car for a whole year. JACOB OWITI
Competition is intensifying globally in the vehicle tracking market, with increasingly tech-savvy consumers enjoying falling prices and preferring around-the-clock real-time tracking systems to those that are prompted or “pinged” in the event of a vehicle heist.
Business Daily Africa, an online version of the newspaper Business Daily, published out of Kenya, Nairobi, reports vehicle tracking system manufacturers are reviewing their price structures because the world market is being inundated with products from North America, China and Europe.
The main solutions in the tracking system game in Africa are Stolen Vehicle Recovery Systems (known as SVRS) and those that are based on the Global Positioning System and Global System for Mobil Communications (GPS/GSM). (more…)

We might have only a year or two to wait before the one of the craziest, tiniest, most cost-effective passenger cars ever seen arrives on car dealers’ lots in the U.S.
Anticipation for the Tata Nano, a product of India, has been building for about two years. The little-bitty bean on wheels, being advertised as “The World Cheapest Car” by makers Tata Motors, will sell here for between $2,500 and $8,000. The final figures are not yet known, because there are several safety and environmental changes that have to be made to the design before it meets U.S. standards.
Even at the high end of the price scale, the Nano will still undercut current low-price competitor the Hyundai Accent. It costs about $13,000. The Accent is powered by 110 horsepower and gets 36 miles to a gallon. The Nano is 33 horsepower and reportedly gets 50 miles to the gallon. (more…)

Attendance was greater than organizers predicted at the 2010 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) Jan. 7-10 in Las Vegas; proof, according to the Consumer Electronics Association, that despite an extended economic recession, consumers are demanding and willing to spend their dollars on electronic gadgetry that entertains them or makes their lives easier.
The square footage of show space was scaled back this year, in light of current economic conditions. Even so, the world’s largest consumer technology trade show drew 120,000 people over the course of four days, which was 6 percent higher from attendance a year earlier. Approximately 2,500 exhibitors showcased their latest technological innovations at the 43rd annual event, including Internet-connected televisions, tablet-sized computers with touch screens, 3D imaging and gaming, and in-car technologies.
Among the attendees was Steven Moehling, Vice President of Sales for LandAirSea Systems Inc. in Woodstock, IL. Moehling has been representing LandAirSea Systems at CES for several years. The vehicle tracking system company executive said that his reason for attending the show was to support several dealer/distributors that are selling LandAirSea tracking products and to network with potential new buyers who are looking for GPS tracking products that provide a competitive edge. When GPS Tracking emerged in the mid-90s onto farms, the application was limited: yield mapping for crops. Now about 15 years later, this technology has made significant in-roads into the way crops are planted which enhances crop yields even further.
To wit, implement manufacturers are now including the wiring and mounting spaces for GPS devices that are built specifically to hold these units. Also, these units are performing important functions in the planting process that adds specificity heretofore not enjoyed by the farming community. (more…)

Are the employees of your business resisting the adoption of GPS tracking technology for fleet management, out of fear that their every move would be monitored?
This common reservation can be put aside if your management can demonstrate that a vehicle tracking system will benefit the company and its mobile workforce equally. And the goal should be communicated from the day the program is incorporated into the business plan. (more…)
