The Effects of Rising Fuel Costs on the Economy
Last week, Oil Price Information Service (OPIS) chief oil analyst Tom Kloza said that the average price of gas could reach $4.25 per gallon by late March or April. The price of gasoline has been tracking closely with oil prices, which have risen about 8% since the end of January 2012. Kloza also noted that refineries have begun switching to costlier summer blends of fuel, which adds roughly 10 cents per gallon of gasoline.
This along with escalating tensions with Iran, and more recently, with conflicts in Afghanistan have caused gas prices to rise due to the uncertainty of fuel supply from the Middle East. This means that gas prices could reach potentially climb as high as $5, or perhaps even more, within this year.
In a recent report from the Beaumont Enterprise, Kloza said that “About 70 percent of the economy is connected to consumers, and gasoline prices are magical for a large portion of consumers.”

Scott County Will Test New GPS Tracking System
Officials in Scott County, MS, will be testing some new GPS tracking equipment to help monitor the county’s garbage trucks. The preliminary plan to test the GPS tracking system on two of the county’s trucks, which were purchased for roughly $400 each, was approved by the Board of Supervisors during their regular meeting.
While fleet supervisors expressed interest in placing the GPS trackers throughout the entire solid waste fleet, the two devices were purchased as a pilot program to gauge the effectiveness of the new GPS tracking system. Once tested and shown to be effective, the tracking system will not only be outfitted for the entire solid waste disposal fleet, it could be expanded to other county-owned vehicles, such as law enforcement.

A Costly Oversight
A report from the Chicago Tribune shows that Chicago aviation officials wasted at least $171,000 on a GPS-capable cell phone service. The GPS tracking technology ended up being completely useless since they didn’t work inside the terminals at O’Hare International Airport. The report, released today, was compiled by the city’s inspector general.
According to Inspector General Joseph Ferguson, the probe covered a period of 3 years, from 2008 through 2010, and spanned over the terms of three commissioners at the Chicago Department of Aviation. The bulk of the responsibility rests on the shoulders of Rosemarie Andolino, the current aviation commissioner who Mayor Richard M. Daley appointed in April 2009, for failing to exercise proper oversight of the GPS tracking system.
Ferguson confronted Andolino about his findings to which she agreed, and in turn, she disconnected the GPS system service for 122 department cell phones and 13 vehicles in the fall of 2011.

LightSquared’s Affect on Current GPS Frequency Usage
In 2005, President Barack Obama, who served as a Senator at the time, invested a significant amount of his personal funds into a company known as SkyTerra, which would later assume the name LightSquared, Inc. The company planned to establish a network of terrestrial (ground-based) communication systems that would allow for unparalleled satellite and mobile device communication. This would allow them to develop a high-speed wireless mobile network, that would be in direct competition with mobile carrier such as AT&T and Verizon.
In January 2011, the FCC granted LightSquared unprecedented access to expand their operations into the wireless internet bandwidth spectrum as part of Obama’s plan to increase access and performance of broadband internet services to people nationwide. Opponents of this expansion, most prominently  the Coalition to Save our GPS, claim that the terrestrial stations will pose a significant signal disruption in the same bandwidth frequency utilized by our country’s GPS tracking constellation of satellites.

Potential Dangers of GPS Jammers on Global Infrastructure
The Global Positioning System, or GPS, plays an integral part of our every day lives. We use GPS to navigate to specific locations, track fleets of service and construction vehicles, guide ships out at sea, and aid airplanes in the sky. And not only this, financial institutions all over the world utilize GPS technology to provide accurate timestamps for millions of financial transactions across the world each and every single day. Although GPS technology has been available to the civilian public for some time, it’s now becoming a necessary staple in the recent digital age.
And most recently, it’s been discovered that GPS signals can potentially be compromised by terrorist organizations and rogue states, even someone with a rudimentary GPS jammer that can be bought on the Internet for $50, said Todd Humphreys, an expert on GPS with the University of Texas. He was the keynote speaker at a conference of world experts organized by the UK – ICT Knowledge Transfer Network in London yesterday. During his speech, he gave his predictions for what lies ahead with this emerging threat, and his outlook was not favorable.

GPS Tracking Systems Necessary Tool for Fleet and Construction Professionals
The effective and efficient management of construction equipment is absolutely crucial to maintaining the bottom-line, especially when it comes to company vehicles. One way to help significantly increase the overall efficiency of construction and fleet service vehicles is by installing GPS tracking devices, such as LandAirSea’s SilverCloud.
According to Swedish analyst firm Berg Insight, who specializes in providing analytical projections data and research on machine-to-machine services fleet-management systems for commercial vehicles in North America is growing across the board – including in heavy-industry sectors such as construction. In fact, Berg Insight expects the overall fleet-management market to reach 3.8 million by 2015.

Big Brother for Big Brother
No one likes being on the receiving end of a speeding ticket. If you’ve ever gotten one, you know how it feels. What makes it worse is knowing that police officers do it all the time without getting penalized for breaking the same laws they’re asking you to abide by. Well, looks like someone finally did something about it.
Last fall, the Sun Sentinel began their investigation into the rampant problem of speeding police officers in South Florida. They obtained and analyzed the data that they collected from SunPass toll records, and recently shared their findings with police departments and sheriff’s offices. As a result, their investigation has spurred South Florida police chiefs and elected leaders to crack down on speeding cops with threats of tough punishment and even employing the use of GPS tracking technology.
