Just in Time for the Holiday Rush

As the popular Christmas song goes, “It’s the most wonderful time of the year…” This song is a staple of the Holiday Season. We hear it on the radio, on T.V. commercials, and especially in the malls as the yearly shopping season begins. There’s just something about this classic song that reminds us that Christmas is near.

It’s the time of the year for eggnog, mistletoes, Santa Claus, and of course, lots of presents. It’s the time of the year when shoppers hit malls and department stores in order to find that perfect gift for their precious loved ones.

Study on Teens and Car Accidents

In a recent study conducted by Liberty Mutual Insurance and Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), 68% of teens said they had narrowly avoided a crash, and more than half had experienced more than one close call in the past year. More than 2,000 students in 28 high schools were surveyed for this study, which was released on June 13.

Of those who said that they had a close call, 55% blamed other drivers or the weather. However, when asked as to what was happening during the exact time of that close call, 30% of teens said they were speeding, 21% said they were texting and 20% said they were talking to passengers in the car.

A similar study conducted by the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and State Farm Insurance in April, found that when crashes occurred because of an error made by a teen, 20% of the time distracted driving was to blame (texting, mp3 players, passengers, etc.). The study also found that speeding was responsible for 21% of crashes in which teens were at fault. According to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, teens are four times more likely to get into accidents than older drivers. About 3,000 teens died in auto accidents in 2009, and according to to CDC estimates, roughly 350,000 were treated for injuries.

Improved Moods and Willingness to Learn Goes Up

Can Technology Help?

Did you know that just a half hour later start time for school has been shown to improve the moods of students and helps their willingness to learn go up?  A recent article on WebMD discussed this topic at length.

In Rhode Island, a study was conducted after school start time was moved from 8:00 am to 8:30 am.  Here is what they discovered:

  1. More students got over seven hours of sleep
  2. Those that got over eight hours of sleep increased as well.
  3. Feelings of depression or unhappiness dropped by 20 percentage points
  4. Annoyed or irritated student attitudes also went down.
  5. Going to the health care center for symptoms of fatigue declined.
  6. On school nights sleep duration increased by about 45 minutes along with earlier bedtimes by 18 minutes.

Getting enough sleep is a major factor not only in the lives of students, but workers, too.  While students can be told when to go to bed, adults have to make up their mind and routines to be able to do so. (more…)

GPS Keeps Student Drivers Honest When Reporting Miles Driven

A Major Milestone

In the course of natural social progression of many American adolescents, certain milestones are commonly known to incite newfound levels of freedom.  The first (and arguably the most important) of these major milestones is when an American teenager turns 15 years old, and is able to obtain a learner’s permit in preparation for obtaining their driver’s license.  Decades ago, the laws outlining what is required for someone to operate a motor vehicle were nearly nonexistent, but over time law enforcement agencies have enacted rigid standards that teens must meet before qualifying for a full-fledged independent driver’s license.  Many parents have taken advantage of teen tracking services that are made possible through the widespread applicability of our country’s GPS tracking system, and it has served to put a certain amount of comfort in their hearts and minds as their young driver embarks on their journey toward social independence.  Although teen tracking programs have the potential to let parents relax when junior is out and about with the family car, this would not be made possible if it wasn’t for the complementation of mandatory drivers’ education programs across the nation.  By adopting a sound GPS tracking system, drivers’ education instructors and local law enforcement departments can ensure that students are upholding their obligations to meet the regulatory principles of these educational facilities.

Staying Honest

One of the tenets of drivers’ education programs that many law enforcement agencies enforce is the minimum number of hours driven outside of the classroom and under the supervision of a qualified and licensed driver, such as a parent or guardian.  After each driving session, the qualified driver is responsible for signing off as a witness to the student’s time behind the wheel.  This practice has historically been left to the honor system, and any student could potentially be forging their supervisors’ signatures on their time card.  While the ultimate test of this dishonesty might become known in the final road test, a drivers’ education facility that implements a system of GPS-enabled teen tracking devices will be able to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the students are abiding to the rules of the driving school.

An Educational Edge

The beauty of teen tracking technology being implemented in an educational setting is that its utility is two-fold; not only can it serve as a supervisory tool to driving instructors and law enforcement, it can also be used as a teaching aid by those same entities to ensure that teens develop solid driving fundamentals and adhere to the rules of the road at all times.  No matter the situation, it is vital to remember that driving is a privilege and not a right.  By using the supervisory and education potential of a GPS-enabled teen tracking system, older generations can ensure that every year’s new crop of teen drivers holds this privilege in the highest regard.

Students Make the Most of Field Trips with New GPS Tracking Application

Friday, May 6th, 2011

In 2005, approximately half of sixth graders in the United States reported that they owned a cell phone. Today, that statistic still holds, plus an additional one-third that claim they own a smart phone. This should not be surprising to many parents, as the teen tracking industry has expanded exponentially in the past half decade alone. Concerned parents have lauded GPS tracking technology for its ability to monitor the safe location of their children, and the ubiquity of GPS tracking systems have made it possible for younger generations to experience and innovate with a network that was originally designed as a tool of national security. With the student travel programs of many schools across the nation stuck in the 20th century, a company dedicated to enhancing the quality of education of our nation’s youth is incorporating teen tracking technology to bring field trips up to date.

Founded 45 years ago, WorldStrides is the first organization of its kind to be accredited as a travel study school. Today, a team of more than 400 professionals are dedicated to making a child’s educational experience as interactively and life-changing as possible. In partnering with SCVNGR, a social teen tracking application that allows participants to share pictures and location statuses using cameras and GPS tracking data, WorldStrides has designed an interactive, location-based game that students can play while on field trips. SCVNGR is used by students to answer questions about the historical and educational experiences they encounter on their field trip such as monuments, historical sites, and nature preserves. After snapping a photo, students can have their friends try and guess where they are before revealing the GPS tracking coordinates. Students can also use the teen tracking system to share personally-designed maps to the interesting places they have visited and encourage their friends to do the same.

In popular student travel destinations such as Washington D.C., SCVNGR utilizes the navigational capabilities of GPS tracking technology to provide the students with maps and routes that will avoid areas of high traffic or recent criminal activity in attempts to keep the trip as safe as possible. One of the chief designers of SCVNGR noted that in an age where technology has never been more prevalent among our younger demographics, the entire paradigm of experiential learning must also shift to keep students involved and interested. Truth be told, the New 3 E’s of Education (according to the 2011 Project Tomorrow report) are Enabled, Engaged, and Empowered. Educational teen tracking applications that utilize the safety and convenience benefits of GPS tracking technology allow for schools across the country to ensure these principles are brought classrooms nationwide.

GPS Tracking Provides Parents Immediate Access To Their Children’s Whereabouts

Monday, April 11th, 2011

Any parent knows that the experience of children transitioning from adolescence to teenage years is often difficult. It is not uncommon to want to control many of our children’s decisions during this period as we experienced these events ourselves many years ago. It may also reflect the fact that we just do not want to let go. Regardless of the strain between parents and their independence-seeking teenage children, the underlying fact is that parents are concerned for their safety and welfare.

With all the growing pains, all parents fear the dreaded driver’s license. This event is inevitable but parents now have a unique tool to ensure their child is responsible behind the wheel. Teen tracking using GPS technology provides a level of security from the comfort of home using a computer and internet access. GPS tracking captures and transmits time, position, and speed just seconds apart to a central web browser. Several GPS tracking companies overlay the live and historical positions over high resolution satellite images such as Google Maps®. This makes the tracking experience easy to follow and intuitive.

Since speed is a major concern, alerts can be sent as a text message or email when a user-defined violation occurs. In addition to speed, location alerts also provide notification of arrival and departure. Even if you do not have access to a computer or are out of town, GPS tracking devices can notify you when your child arrives at school, home, etc. This provides a simple and logical solution for less than a cup of cheap coffee per day. Teen tracking continues to grow in popularity and even provides a financial benefit. Many insurance companies recognize GPS tracking devices as a theft recovery solution and offer a policy discount.

System Provides Multiple Purposes

Safety, Communications and Monitoring Made Easy

It used to be that when one went on a vacation abroad, communications were few and far between.  Now that has all changed with the advent of the cell phone.  Additionally, once a person experiences travel with wireless communications, it seems like less of a trip since constant contact can be kept with those left behind.

There is a program, however, that is making the best use of GPS Tracking and communications options for students who take part in their global travel experiences.  The People to People Ambassador Programs is in charge of the system and uses it in important ways.

Keeping Track of the Program

The programs are designed to give students a wide range of experiences in other cultures and locations.  Because of the inherent dangers that exist in such programs, the addition of GPS devices makes a lot of sense.

Key features of the system include:

GPS enabled cell phone for the instructor in each group.  This not only allows the instructor to keep in touch with the company on the progress of the trip, but also allows them to have instant access to parents and guardians if necessary. (more…)
