New Meaning to “Carry Your Cross”
A beekeeper in Twizel, New Zealand, will soon embark on his third trek across the length of New Zealand while carrying a heavy, solid totara wooden cross. This time however, Ryan Craig, 25, will make his journey with a few additional tools.
Craig took his first tour in 2008, after he returned to New Zealand from serving with Youth With a Mission (YWAM), an international, inter-denominational, non-profit Christian missionary organization, which was founded by Loren Cunningham in 1960. The second venture happened in 2009, and at the time, he thought that the second would be his last.
However, Craig has decided to give a third try, and this time, he will be carrying a heavier cross than his previous models. The cross will rest on a small two-wheeled trolley. The trolley has been outfitted with lights on the back, which has a sound system that will continuously play “music of the cross” as he walks an estimated 2200 km, or roughly 1360 miles.
The trolley has also been equipped with a GPS tracking system that will transmit his position every 10 minutes.

Continual Paradigm Shifts in Mobile Phone Technology
The days of using your cellphone just for making phone calls, is slowly becoming a relic of the past with the rise of smartphones. There was once a time, not to long ago, where the simple handheld, push-button, one-color, mobile phone were immensely popular and considered the apex of mobile phone technology – phones like the Motorola StarTAC (1996) and the Nokia 8260 (2000). Soon afterwards, RIM’s Blackberry became the new standard in smart phone technology, offering constant fast, on-the-go connection to emails and internet for business owners and corporate executives.
And then came the iPhone (2007), which completely revolutionized the smartphone industry with its intuitive touchscreen and user-friendly app-based operating system. And what seemed at one point a luxury for wealthy executives and the tech-savvy, has soon become the norm for the masses.

GPS Tracking Devices and CCTV Used to Manipulate Traffic Lights for IOCÂ
In just a few short weeks, the entire world will be gearing up for the 2012 Olympics. The global event is sure to draw thousands of spectators from around the world to London, which ultimately means that there will be a significant boost in revenue for businesses. Many local businesses, especially the retail shops and restaurants, will be eagerly awaiting the swarms of tourists, who will most likely help generate some much needed cash flow this summer.
And it looks like the organizers in London used some extraordinary tactics in order to win the bid to host the Olympics in the capital city. One such tactic was to use GPS tracking devices and CCTV to orchestrate the smooth flow of traffic for a convoy from the International Olympic Committee, which came in 2005 for a visit. (more…)

Purse Thieves Tracked Down with iPhone App
A Gonzaga University graduate student was beaten unconscious early Thursday morning while attempting to stop two women from stealing his friend’s purse. Local law enforcement in Spokane, Wash., were able to track the suspects using a GPS application, which was installed on one of the iPhones stolen from the victims.
Police arrested Tayone D. Akers, 20, Anthony J. Walker, 20, and Ronald R. Scott, 18, and two 16-year-old girls.
The victims, Ann Shaffer and Alicia Bowers, who are also Gonzaga students, told police they were crossing North Standard Street at East Sinto Avenue about 2 a.m. early Thursday morning when an SUV pulled up and two females jumped out demanding for them to hand over their purses.

High-Tech Way to Track Water Flow Along the DeltaÂ
Researchers from UC Berkeley spent the day (Wednesday, May 9) tossing dozens of high-tech cylinders into the Sacramento River in order to gather data on water flow. The smartphone-equipped floating robots demonstrated the next generation of water monitoring technology, promising to transform the way government agencies monitor one of the state’s most precious resources.
The Floating Sensor Network project, led by associate professor Alexandre Bayen, a researcher at the Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society (CITRIS), has developed a network of mobile sensors that can be deployed rapidly to provide real-time, high-resolution GPS location data in hard-to-map Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta, with its complex network of channels that direct drinking water to two-thirds of California’s population and irrigation water for 3 million acres of agriculture. The robotic cylinders can also provide valuable information on pollution, salinity and other variables.

GPS Tracking Device Used to Track Down Weapons Smugglers
An 18-year-old man could potentially face up to 20 years in prison for attempting to smuggle firearms and ammunition from North Carolina to Mexico. Law enforcement officials were able to stop Javier Molina on Interstate 10 in Jackson County, Mississippi, after determining his location with a GPS tracker that they fitted onto the black pickup truck that he was driving.
According to court records, police found 22 weapons, 902 rounds of ammunition, 16 magazines, five shotgun barrels, six gun stocks, four 12-gauge barrels and two scopes stashed in the truck.
Court documents show that a Homeland Security Investigations agent had been tracking the 1994 Ford Ranger since Molina’s uncle, Jose Luis Santos-Garcia, had been pulled over in the same pickup truck a couple of months prior to the incident in Jackson County. Santos-Garcia has been charged with attempting to smuggle two pistols, three bullet-proof vests and two stolen four-wheelers to Mexico.

DOJ Claims that Warranted Cell Phone Tracking Would Hinder Its Efforts
Earlier this year, the Supreme Court ruled that law enforcement officials would be required to obtain an official court-issued warrant before attaching a GPS tracking device on a suspect’s vehicle. This decision came in response to a case involving a Washington, D.C. night club owner who was initially convicted of drug dealing. The initial ruling, however, was later overturned in an appellate court after it determined that the prolonged unwarranted use of the GPS tracking device that law enforcement officials placed on the suspect’s Jeep even though the evidence obtained from the GPS tracker clearly indicated he was involved in illegal narcotics distribution.
The controversial case made its way to the Supreme Court, where all 9 Justices unanimously agreed that the suspect’s Constitutional right to privacy, which protects against unreasonable searches and seizures, were violated. Privacy advocates praised the decision as a huge win for individual rights. However, law enforcement agencies, such as the FBI, found the ruling to be a significant obstacle for investigative and surveillance purposes.

Patient is Reported Missing in Nova Scotia and Could Pose a Threat to Herself and the Public
Amy Ogilvie, a patient at the East Coast Forensic Hospital in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia (Canada), went missing on Friday night after having been out on a pass. She was scheduled to return to the hospital on Friday evening, but did not show up, and doctors are concerned that Ogilvie may pose a threat to herself and others while away from treatment.
The hospital, however, did not notify the public until 72 hours after she was discovered missing. According to hospital director Dr. Scott Theriault, “The hospital protocol is that we notify the public after 72 hours. That is a balance we strike because on the one hand, most of the patients return long before that period of time.”
