Combating Domestic Violence
GPS Trackers Will Help Keep Victims Safe
Domestic violence is often described as not only physical abuse, but mental and emotional as well. The victims of domestic abuse are often left feeling helpless, scared, alone and frightened, but lawmaker, authorities and support groups are hoping all of that will change with the new legislation signed into law earlier today.
When Governor Rell of Connecticut put her John Hancock onto the new legislation, which many believe will provide additional tools to law enforcement, educators and support groups, she changed the rules of the game associated with domestic violence. The new legislation is likely to usher in a new wave against the problem of domestic violence, starting with education, and ending with use of GPS tracking systems to monitor high-risk offenders.
The architects of the legislation, which include Rep. Flexer, Christopher Donovan and Gerald Fox, have all stated publicly that the new legislation will help reduce the problem of domestic violence and hopefully bring the victims of domestic violence some safety and peace-of-mind. A source close to the lawmakers involved with the process expressed that with the new training tools, education process, community help and use of tracking system technology that domestic violence victims should feel a renewed sense of hope
People with an established record of domestic violence, or who violate restraining orders will be required to wear monitoring devices similar to the devices worn by sex offenders. These portable monitoring tools, similar to the functionality of the Victoria tracking system, allow police to have 24/7 remote-access to the movements of the offender. Also, if the monitoring unit is tampered with in anyway, police will be sent to search for the offender.
The legislation should bring domestic violence victims in Connecticut hope, help and most importantly, a way out of their situation in a safe manner.
