Granting Tracking in a Limited Manner

Source acquired via Times Union, June 9, 2010, Schenectady – Courts in Schenectady have had the power to sentence criminals to electronic monitoring. The only problem was that electronic monitoring was never a real possibility, since the county never owned any GPS tracking bracelets. Recently, due to a unanimous vote, Schenectady was granted $40,000 in order to purchase GPS tracking bracelets.

The $40,000 that the county now has is enough to purchase 12 GPS tracking bracelets. The bracelets will only be given out to those people who have been convicted of domestic abuse. Schenectady judges will determine which offenders must wear the GPS tracking bracelets. Electronic monitoring will become a probation condition that is granted to certain criminals.

Helping to Reduce Jail Population

Not only will the county be able to keep a watchful eye on convicted domestic abusers, but doling out GPS tracking bracelets means taking up less jail space. Those criminals who could not be let out on parole may now be paroled with the help of a GPS tracking bracelet. Local law enforcement members will help the country parole board to track certain criminals. The county believes that they have enough manpower to accurately track those wearing a GPS tracking bracelet around the clock.

Any criminal who tries to remove a GPS tracking device will be in violation of parole. Further, attempting to remove a tracking device will alert police. Thus, the only way to remove a device is to serve parole time without a hitch. The county has not given a GPS tracking bracelet to any parolee yet, though some bracelets are expected to be handed out within the near future.

Mixed Opinions About Tracking

Residents of Schenectady have mixed feelings about the GPS tracking program. While some people believe that tracking a criminal is a great way to prevent crime, others are not so sure. Some believe that allowing a parolee to wander around with a GPS bracelet is not enough. Yet, GPS tracking bracelets are being used around the world to track criminals, and, in most instances, these trackers are well worth the price.

Many believe that as long as Schenectady County takes the time to accurately monitor criminals who wear GPS tracking bracelets, these parolees can be kept on a tight electronic leash. Due to GPS tracking, less jail space is required, and parolees can be monitored for the duration of their parole.
