GPS Tracking and Preventing Vehicle Theft
OEM Tracking on the Horizon?
Monthly Cost Should Be Low
How long will it be until we see GPS Tracking devices placed into vehicles at the manufacturer level? GM already outfits many of their vehicles with On-Star. But, even though it has been accepted and is used by many owners, it is an expensive option and provides more services than the average driver might use.
The alternative would be to outfit vehicles with a GPS Tracking device with the purpose of tracking for location, speed and direction of travel. And, one that could be activated when needed, not charged on a monthly basis.
That stands a better chance of being implemented over an On-Star type of solution. Here are those who would embrace this type of solution:
Law Enforcement Agencies
Police have enough to do in trying to solve serious crimes like murder, drug traffic and the like. Theft is a crime that they try to keep up with, but with the economy as it is, more petty larceny incidents occur every day. And these cases get relegated to the bottom of the piles because others are more important. That is why they like to see GPS Tracking implemented in vehicles (and other assets for that matter). Being able to solve a crime quickly is a great help to them. Following up on the location of a vehicle or asset that has been stolen gives the chance to make an arrest and recover the stolen item and close the case within days, rather than weeks, months, years, or maybe never.
Insurance Companies
The insurance business profit model is based upon risk. The lower the risk, the better the rates. GPS Tracking lowers risk for insurance companies because recovery of cars and trucks keeps them from having to pay out full in these incidents. You might even find that you will be given a premium reduction for installing them on your vehicles.
Individual Owners
People are getting tired of having their personal property stolen. GPS Tracking provides a method of watching property that is valuable and moveable. This includes cars, trucks, RVs, boats, 4 wheelers, etc. But, some even track their flat screen television sets. Being able to recover something that has been stolen is a mixed bag: you are glad to get it back, but it might be damaged and you might not want it. But, at least it is done and the perpetrators are caught.
Very soon, if we keep pushing the idea, you will find more vehicles have GPS Tracking than those that do not. And that is a good thing.
