NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Parents are starting to use a tracking system designed to keep an eye on their children.

It uses GPS technology and follows the footprint of their car.

It’s something some parents might want to think about the next time they hand their child the car keys.

Ever wonder if your teenager is somewhere they shouldn’t be? Are they telling the truth?

Now, if they’re driving the car you can check.

“It does work. Put the device in and they don’t have to know,” said Hank Salyer.

He captures fugitives for a living. But criminals aren’t the only ones he wants to monitor. He also keeps an eye on his children using a GPS tracking system.

“One way to find out if they’re deceiving you is by using a device that will show you and tell you the truth,” he said/

There are several trackers on the market including one called a Tracking Key.

“There are no monthly fees. The retail price is for $199.99,” said Matt Basham of Pep Boys Auto.

The device is available at any auto parts store and runs on two AAA batteries.

The device can be placed anywhere in the car. When the car comes back home, pull it out and plug it into a computer.

Then get a detailed report with departure and arrival times and locations.

It also reveals how many miles were driven and a top speed.

The Tracking Key software is compatible with Google Earth, and that means you can actually see a photograph of where the vehicle has been.

Legally you can place the tracker on your vehicle as long as you own the vehicle.

Salyer said it’s a good way to keep your children honest.

“You can advise them and say, ‘Yeah I’m tracking you. I know where you’re going and what you’re doing.’ And now it’s left up to his own integrity,” he said.

It’s one more way to keep your family safe. Other more sophisticated GPS devices are available that allow you to watch every move of your vehicle in real time. Many of them require monthly subscriptions.
