Only an industry expert can fully understand the complicated science and engineering behind a Global Positioning System tracking product.
Yet consumers are being bombarded with a host of new GPS tracking products and applications. GPS tracking technology has exploded in a very short span of time. Several years ago, there were a handful of competitors in the market. Now there are perhaps hundreds of GPS tracking companies.
As they are becoming more affordable and user-friendly, high-tech GPS gadgets are winning favor with everyday consumers. It’s as important as ever for a potential buyer to make an informed decision. Cost and features are important, but so are the people standing behind the product.
Once the potential buyer has done some basic research, he or she will learn that GPS tracking products fall into two basic categories. The difference is the way the GPS tracking systems collect and display location data. Passive systems store the data in internal memory for download and review at a later time. Active systems, also known as “real-time” GPS tracking devices, give location readings almost immediately as they occur, and the user views the data from a remote computer.
When you’re getting ready to buy, where do you start? Following are some things to look for when shopping for a GPS tracking company:
- Customer service: GPS tracking companies should value consumer satisfaction. Topping the list of “must haves” should be a company that understands your needs and will keep lines of communication open long after the transaction is complete. Frequently Asked Questions online serve a useful purpose, but they are no substitute for trained customer care representatives.
- Warranty: Does the GPS tracking company have a warranty or trade-in policy? GPS tracking is sophisticated, electronic technology. Not all problems can be anticipated and eliminated. A manufacturer should be confident enough in his product that he will agree to cover malfunction under normal use.
- Technical support: GPS tracking device users who are not tech savvy, will feel some assurance knowing there is help a phone call away. Test the GPS tracking company’s technical support staff. How quickly do you get a live, company representative on the phone when you call? Ask a representative of the GPS tracking company for help choosing a GPS tracking system that is suitable for your application. Do they give you the time you need or do their answers sound hurried or pre-scripted?
- Experience: Knowledge and experience go hand-in-hand. How long has your GPS tracking company been in business? Type “vehicle tracking” or “GPS tracking” in your computer’s search engine and see who is highest rated. Remember, first impressions count. A good GPS tracking company will show their prominence on-line.
- Reputation: Ask the GPS tracking company where their products are in use. If government, organizations and large corporations are buying GPS tracking products in bulk, that’s proof that they work well in that given application.
- Accessibility: It might be a red flag when e-mail is the only way a customer can communicate with his GPS tracking company. Look for a phone number on the Web site. Does someone answer quickly and in an informative manner? When a customer needs to check on the status of an order, or needs more information on a product, and the company Web site says, “send us an e-mail, then be patient,” odds are the message will generate a very different response.
- Engineering: Is the GPS tracking device American or foreign-made? Is it a quality-built design or more of a copycat? Is physical proximity to the manufacturer important? Small issues may grow more complicated when the manufacturer and the end user are separated by 7,000 miles, an ocean and a language barrier.
- Testimonials: There is no truer reflection of customer satisfaction than the opinions of people just like you. Read Web-posed comments and discussion forums. Get in on a live chat session. And there’s nothing wrong with referrals obtained the old-fashioned way. Ask neighbors and friends who use GPS tracking products with a similar application about their experiences with their GPS tracking company.
