Sex Offender Finds A Way Out of Tracking

The City is Caught in an Awkward Position

Which is More Important: Community Safety or Individual Rights?

Source acquired via 10 News, June 10, 2010, San Diego – Daniel Zetterholm, 51, molested a 14-year-old child during the 1990s. He spent 13 years in prison, and now he is living somewhere in the downtown San Diego area. Police do not know Zetterholm’s location, and this convicted child molester cannot be tracked via GPS due to a legal loophole.

Offender Slips Through the Crack

Zetterholm registered as a transient, which means that police cannot legally track him. According to Lt. Andra Brown (San Diego Police Department), Zetterholm is “…currently not wanted for any crimes, not on parole or on probation, and not subject to any electronic monitoring at this time.” This is frightening news for San Diego residents who could be living next to a child molester – without knowing about it. In the past, child molesters who have been released on parole have committed other crimes, though these criminals are usually monitored.

Daniel Zetterholm is not being monitored, and he could commit another crime at any moment. In an effort to warn the public about Zetterholm, police are presently passing out his photograph to San Diego residents. Police hope that alerting the public as to Zetterholm’s appearance, those with children can be on the lookout for anyone who looks like Zetterholm.

One San Diegan recently told press that she believes letting Zetterholm loose is “…an incident waiting to happen.” “Look at Chelsea King,” she stated “…they know that rehabilitation rates are so slim. It does scare me as a citizen.” At the time of this writing, Zetterholm has not found a permanent residence. Once he does find a place to stay, he is required to check in with authorities.

Most Offenders are Tracked

Presently, nearly 60 San Diego residents are sexually violent predators. Almost all of these residents are currently being tracked via GPS tracking devices. There are 8 sexually violent predators that are not being tracked, and Zetterholm is one of them. While most residents of San Diego were alarmed to discover that Zetterholm is not being tracked, some residents do not agree with this stance.

One resident recently stated that “…he did his time and now he is out and no one likes it… if he commits a crime than he should go back to prison, but if not than leave him alone.” This kind of sentiment is rare, though some citizens believe that the 13 years Zetterholm spent in prison is enough. At present, Zetterholm has not committed any further crimes.
