Stolen Rental Involved in Jewelry Store Caper
RAWLINS, WY – Criminals have been known to use stolen vehicles in robberies, because obviously, a getaway car is a big piece of evidence and one that is easily traceable. It’s best if someone else is suspected of the crime; at least as a temporary smokescreen.
That strategy backfired recently on some suspects from New York. The stolen car they used in a heist had a real-time GPS tracking device covertly installed on it. Police tracked them down, even after they had driven the stolen car nearly 2,000 miles cross-country.
Two police departments cooperated on the investigation, which involved a jewelry store robbery in Wyoming and a rental car from New York City. New York police were apparently alerted after a car rental had not been returned. The owner of the rental agency said that it installed GPS tracking systems on each of its rentals for the purpose of fleet management, and to bring down insurance costs. Police tracked the stolen car to Wyoming, where it apparently had been involved in a jewelry store armed robbery.
NYC police believed the car to be near Rawlins, WY and notified the Wyoming authorities. A short time later the car was stopped, the unnamed suspects were taken into custody and a search of the car uncovered $37,000 in stolen jewelry, and several pieces of electronic equipment including iPods, laptops and digital cameras.
Potential owners of GPS tracking systems sometimes are suspect of the true power of modern vehicle tracking devices. Because the location data is derived from radio signals from satellites in space, GPS tracking is a global technology. The owner of the GPS tracking system and the actual tracked vehicle can be separated by a few blocks, or they can have thousands of miles between them, as was the case of the New York to Wyoming robbery investigation. The accuracy of the vehicle tracking system will not be compromised.
