Student Uses GPS Technology to Find Stolen Goods

Student Learns How To Use Technology to Solve a Crime

Fighting Back Against Crime with GPS Tracking

Source acquired via Seaholm Highlander, May, 28, 2010, Seaholm, England – Stealing any object these days is nearly impossible thanks to GPS tracking technology. Stealing an iPod and a cell phone from a teenager is a crime that the best criminal won’t easily get away with. Seaholm high school freshman, Jacob Rothenberg’s cell phone and iPod were stolen from his locker – using GPS technology, Rothenberg tracked the items, and asked his mom to retrieve them.

Tracking His Cell Phone

After using the Sprint family locator that was included with his cell phone, Rothenberg was able to track the phone’s location. He wound up tracking his phone to an address in Bloomfield Hills. When he reached the address, Rothenberg did what any high school freshman would do – he called his mom. Rothenberg’s mother, Carol Harlow, went directly to the door of the home where she was greeted by one teenager and his girlfriend.

Upon demanding that the two return her son’s phone and iPod, the thieves eventually gave in to Harlow’s request. The thief’s mother told press that she was unaware of her son’s actions. After questioning the teen who stole Rothenberg’s items, it was discovered that the thief stole the phone and iPod in order to acquire money to buy his girlfriend an anniversary present.

According to a police report, the thief learned on YouTube how to pick the lock and open a locker without the correct combination. On the day that Rothenberg’s items were stolen, three other lockers were also opened. Police were able to recover various items, though some items had been sold at a local pawn shop. Those responsible for the thefts were made to pay restitution.

Leads to Other Recoveries

Police may not have caught the thieves responsible for the Seaholm High School thefts if Rothenberg hadn’t decided to use his phone’s GPS tracking capabilities. Those people who do not have a cell phone that includes a tracking plan, can still protect personal items by using individual GPS trackers. GPS tracking devices can be attached or implanted into nearly any item, and these trackers are also inexpensive.

Rothenberg was fortunate that his phone included a tracking plan. Other Seaholm High School theft victims have Rothenberg to thank for the return of their stolen goods as well. Without the use of his phone, the goods in question would have been sold. By keeping tabs on all personal items with the help of a GPS tracker, recovering stolen goods is a lot easier today than it once was.
