Football Player Apologizes for Bad Attitude
Wednesday, May 12th, 2010A young professional football player this week was given a big dose of public respect after doing something few people his age would do: owning up to his mistakes and apologizing.
Carl Nicks, 27, a left guard on the starting line for the New Orleans Saints, announced something that was not too surprising. When he was a University of Nebraska-Lincoln Cornhusker he had a bad attitude and acted like a jerk.
Who among us hasn’t done something totally stupid when we were in our teens and 20s? Unless we were arrested, caught or forced to face the reality, we’d never want to revisit the incident.
Perhaps the admitting part would have been enough to convince most people that Nicks was adequately embarrassed. But the athlete went a step further, (unsure if he was influenced by Mom, God or conscience), made an unannounced visit to his alma mater and formally apologized to a stranger.
Nicks said his “sorrys” to current head coach Bo Pelini and athletic director Tom Osborne. Pelini wasn’t even the coach when Nicks played at the school. For those taking notes, it does not appear to be a publicity event. (more…)
