Florida Power and Light Ready for Storms

Proactive Planning Helps Insure Superior Responsiveness

Florida Power and Light has implemented a new GPS tracking system that allows them to be more responsive in the event of a storm system that knocks out power to its customers.  The system is a home-grown implementation that allows those who monitor it to view where trucks are located in relation to where power outages occur as well as closed streets, power lines that are down and other hazards.

This is important because it shows how another organization has adapted the benefits of GPS tracking devices to a customer service system.  This helps increase customer satisfaction while making the safety and security of a community a high priority.

What Happens After the Storm?

After a storm the new system might not be immediately available, but once it comes online, then it will begin to make a big difference.

Another way that this system can be of assistance to customers is that it can send out alerts to areas without power as to when they might be turned on again.  These alerts can be sent via cell systems as text messages, or via cell phone calls and emails for those with Internet access.

Florida Power and Light serves the South Florida area and has already tested their system in an effort to be prepared for severe weather instances.

Other emergency agencies can benefit from GPS tracking systems, too.  Being able to track where vehicles are or have been during the aftermath of a storm helps them to accumulate data on where hardest hit areas might be and then be able to deploy the strongest assistance to those areas first. Consumers Prefer Hands-On Approach to Vehicle Theft Prevention

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

A motorist tracks a speeding bus. New players in the car track market are offering prices as low as Sh15,000 to cover a car for a whole year. JACOB OWITI

Competition is intensifying globally in the vehicle tracking market, with increasingly tech-savvy consumers enjoying falling prices and preferring around-the-clock real-time tracking systems to those that are prompted or “pinged” in the event of a vehicle heist.

Business Daily Africa
, an online version of the newspaper Business Daily, published out of Kenya, Nairobi, reports vehicle tracking system manufacturers are reviewing their price structures because the world market is being inundated with products from North America, China and Europe.

The main solutions in the tracking system game in Africa are Stolen Vehicle Recovery Systems (known as SVRS) and those that are based on the Global Positioning System and Global System for Mobil Communications (GPS/GSM). (more…)

Not Track Shoes, But Tracking Shoes

When Dad’s on the move and you’re concerned he might wander too far and get lost, put on his tracking shoes.

Not “track shoes,” of the athletic variety, but “tracking shoes,” of the GPS variety.

A GPS tracking device dealer in Europe has teamed with a shoe manufacturer to make shoes fitted with tracking systems available for Alzheimer’s patients.

It’s not available yet. A prototype is said to be coming by the end of 2009, and assuming the technology is a success, a debut sometime in 2010.

Alzheimer’s a Devastating Disease of Memory

Alzheimer’s disease is considered one of the main forms of dementia, a brain disorder, which gradually robs the sufferer of his abilities to remember, imagine and learn. The disease usually affects those people who are above 60 years of age, but there is also a progressive and rare form of Alzheimer’s disease that strikes people in their early 40s and 50s. Numerous drugs are used to treat symptoms, which include anxiety and depression. But the disease itself is not curable.

Family members who are taking care of loved ones with Alzheimer’s might soon have another tool in their arsenal: a pair of GPS shoes enabled with GPS tracking technology. Will it be a savior or a savings-drainer for those patients suffering from this malady? (more…)

GPS Tracking System vs. Radar Gun

GPS Tracking Technology

A speeding violation or traffic ticket is something almost every driver, young or old, has gotten at one time or another. Although the circumstances vary from individual-to-individual, many people share the common story of, “I understand your radar gun may have said I was going over the speed limit, but I assure you officer that is impossible”. The radar gun and police officer have one story and the person who was driving has a differing one. Unfortunately, the law does not care about your recollection of the events and will always side with the law enforcement officer giving the ticket. That is of course until GPS tracking technology became so cheap and user-friendly that it now provides a way for citizens to combat the semi-reliable form of radar technology that law enforcement agencies use to clock speed.

Flaws of Radar and Laser Guns:

Radar or laser guns, the most common and popular approach law enforcement agents in the field use to  quickly calculate a motorist’s speed, are not 100% reliable and have a history of being error-prone. According to an online site dedicated to providing information on radar guns, 1 out of 4 traffic tickets given out due to a reading of a radar gun are in error.  The most common reasons for radar gun error are: (more…)
