Teen Challenges Ethics of GPS Tracking

Wednesday, December 3rd, 2008

teen-interviewAlthough the use of GPS tracking technology has become widespread and widely acclaimed, the issue of privacy continues to be dissected and debatedThis is especially notable when it comes to tracking teen driving habits.  The majority of parents testify in favor of GPS vehicle tracking devices.  They acknowledge that the installation of this unit in their teenager’s car has given them greater peace of mind while making their teen driver demonstrate more responsibility behind the wheel, thereby keeping him or her safe.  Many teenagers on the other hand, tend to view GPS tracking as a manipulative means of controlling their actions and invading their privacy, putting a decisive spin on the term “generation gap”.

Steve Moehling, Vice-President of Sales, LandAirSea Systems, Inc., was recently interviewed by a senior at St. Petersburg High School regarding the effectiveness of his company’s most popular product, the GPS Tracking Key

The Right Driver’s Ed Program Can Make A Difference

Monday, November 17th, 2008

There’s a lot of bad stuff out there to destroy teenagers—alcohol, drugs, violence, gangs, peer pressure, pregnancy.  Yet, what parents often overlook is the most potentially life threatening activity a teen can engage in on a consistent basis:  driving a motor vehicle.  For decades, car crashes have reigned supreme as the cause of fatalities among youths between the ages of 16 and 20.  So it makes sense that choosing the best driver education program for a teen is one of the most important decisions a parent will make.

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008

Start with running late.  Combine with a touch of fatigue.  Throw in a brimming cup of hot coffee.  Add a dash of cell phone.  Mix well with youth, overconfidence and a heaping dose of “it can’t happen to me” and there you have it, mom and dad:  a disaster in search of a target!

The GPS Tracking Key—Not Just Another Gadget

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008

GPS tracking devices.  They’re becoming as commonplace in our surveillance society as the mobile phone and almost as multi-functional.  And probably the most popular and most affordable spinoff of satellite technology is the GPS Tracking Key.

For newcomers to this science fictional phenomenon, GPS stands for Global Positioning System.  It is a satellite-based navigation system comprised of 24 satellites that have been positioned in orbit by the U.S. Department of Defense.  The GPS Tracking Key is a compact unit that runs on two AAA batteries and is used primarily to track the whereabouts of vehicles.

A 16 Year-Old Deserves to Live Another 70 Years

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

We’ve all seen this at one time or another along the side of the road:  a cross or other distinguishable marker bearing a name and an inscription and usually surrounded by flowers.  A curious motorist might think it unfortunate.  For the parents of a teenager, however, the roadside shrine is an emotionally disturbing reminder of their child’s mortality.

Car crashes are the leading cause of permanent disability and death among teenage drivers in America and other industrialized nations throughout the world.  In 2005, more than 7,000 young people between the ages of 15 and 20 were involved in fatal automobile accidents, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.  Findings also indicate that each year, in North America alone, over 2.5 million teens will become new drivers.  And each year, teens overall will be involved in over 9,000 driving related fatalities, taking not only their own lives, but those of passengers and pedestrians as well.

To any seasoned driver, this information comes as no surprise.  Teens by nature succumb to peer pressure which invariably leads to risk taking, especially behind the wheel.  While alcohol and drugs remain major contributors to teenage motor vehicle accidents, this new millennium has ushered in the additional distraction of cell phones and MP3 players.

“So how do I keep my teen from becoming one of these awful statistics?”

Teens and Parents Combine Efforts to Promote Safe Driving.

Monday, September 8th, 2008

A speeding carload of teenagers…a rainy night…a slippery road…a couple of beers.

A parent’s worst nightmare.

The much anticipated driver’s license is the symbolic rite of passage for teens throughout the industrialized world.  Yet automobile accidents continue to top the list of injuries and fatalities among teenagers between the ages of 16 and 19.

Because the first year of driving is generally the most stressful for both teens and their parents, many sources have devised solutions to help alleviate that stress.  By following some simple guidelines, parents can enjoy some much needed peace of mind while their teens achieve a certain measure of that independence so crucial to their development.
