GPS Systems Used to Enforce Taxi Licenses

A Hard Job is Made Easier

Future Uses of this Technology Coming Soon?

Some major cities have a hard time keeping up with taxi cab licensing.  Not the license and registration of the vehicles, but rather the licensing of the cab to do business.  Consider that a city the size of New York City has thousands of cabs running 24 x 7.  The requirement to obtain licenses to operate these vehicles has been enforced as best as is possible, but with a small budget and few personnel, it has been an up-hill battle. Tough Economic Times Bring Increases in Criminal Activities

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

With hard times come hard criminal activities.  Bands of roving thieves are stealing more products and merchandise than ever before and demanding ransom for lives, too.  You can find them in pirate ships off of Somalia, or on the streets of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

It seems that even though authorities are successful in taking some off of the streets (and water), new recruits quickly take their places and the illegal activity just continues to grow.

Most of these groups of bandits are into drug dealing as their first source of income.  Indeed, many countries have “better and more important work to do” rather than cracking down on the drug trade.  In fact, if the flow of money were clearer, the leaders of third world nations are filling their own pockets with blood-tainted drug money.

But, fortunately, the effort of the United States DEA and local police agencies has made it more difficult for them to make money.  Often, they turn to other methods including extortion, kidnapping for ransom and even bank robbery.

Now, these thieves have added another way to add to their ill-gotten gain: cargo theft.  The reason that this is becoming more common is because there is a low risk / high reward payoff. (more…)

GPS Replaces Private Investigators

Can this Technology Replace Humans?

Private Investigators Feel Threatened

Source acquired via CBS News, April 29, 2010 – Now that GPS tracking devices are affordable and readily available, are private investigators necessary? In the past, private investigators used various personal GPS tracking devices in order to keep tabs on a subject. Today, parents and spouses alike can track anyone using the same devices.

Since most GPS tracking tools come with detailed software that provides a monitor with a complete report, services offered by private investigators don’t seem to be worth the extra expense. One private investigator recently told CBS News that he thinks it’s good that parents “…are monitoring their kids and making sure they are as trustworthy as they want them to be…”

Small and Very Useful

In addition to attaching a small GPS tracker to a car or backpack, parents can also include a GPS tracking feature on a child’s cell phone. Many cell phones will allow parents to track outgoing and incoming calls, and some will even allow parents to restrict certain phone numbers. Monitoring a child today is as simple as purchasing a GPS tracking device – no private investigator required. (more…)

Technology Aids Students

Tracking with GPS Enabled Cell Phones

In Columbia, Missouri, students at Missouri University have a volunteer organization called Stripes.  This organization provides free rides to students on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings.

Why is this important?  Students who go to bars and drink have an avenue to get home without endangering lives on the road through impaired driving.  Existing university programs are aimed at discouraging under-aged drinking but this one merely offers a way to safely arrive home without making judgments about the drinking activities.

Stripes is supplying drivers with GPS enabled cell phones and using a common vehicle tracking system with a dispatcher who can track each vehicle through the driver’s cell phone.

The system has examined for about a year because of its ability to increase safety and accountability for both the driver and patrons.  Stripes is negotiating the cost with one of the major cell phone carriers to implement the program fully. (more…)

Technology Helps Save Another Life

When Traditional Means for Monitoring Fails – This One Comes Through

Source acquired via the Hudson Reporter, April 22, 2010, Jersey City – Sometime during the early morning hours on April 9, 2010, an elderly man wandered away from his New Jersey home wearing nothing but his pyjamas. No one inside of the man’s house heard him walk away from the home, though the man’s wife noticed that the 83-year old was not at home when she awoke around 3 a.m.

The Jersey City Police Department received a distressed call from the elderly woman around 3:15 a.m, and the city’s Operation Lifesaver Program was immediately put into action. The man who wandered away from his home was wearing a GPS tracking bracelet as part of the program that Jersey City police introduced a few months ago.

As soon as the police were called, the tracking bracelet worn by the elderly man was activated. Within moments, Jersey City police were able to track the man to a White Castle location. The man was unharmed, though he was clearly confused. According to police, the elderly man may not have been found without the help of GPS tracking technology. (more…)
