A “Ticking Time Bomb”
The world is becoming more and more connected each and every single day, and each of us who live and work and interact in this digitized world give little bits of ourselves away. With social media applications such as Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Tumblr, individual and corporate data that at one point in time was considered highly personal and classified, has now been made readily accessible to the general public with a click of a mouse.
At the turn of the millennium, the term “server” still referred to the person who brings the food to your table at a restaurant, but now it encompasses a completely different meaning altogether. Today, a server refers to a computing program that allows users to store electronic data, such as emails, Google searches, banking records, phone conversations, text messages, pictures, personal information, etc.

More than Just Coffee
Colombian coffee has been recognized worldwide for its high quality and distinctive taste. Since 1959, Juan Valdez, the famed Colombian coffee farmer, alongside Conchita, his trusted mule, have become the universal symbol representing the pride and joy of the Colombian coffee industry. This fictional character has become a national icon, to the point where the Juan Valdez character is used as an ingredient brand, to specifically denote coffee beans that are only grown and harvested in Colombia.
The coffee industry has served as a source of economic stability for the entire country by providing a source of steady income for hundreds of thousands of native Colombians. However, Colombia is also recognized as the world’s largest producer of cocaine and business. The effects of cocaine production range from environmental damage to effects on education, health and the country’s economy.

New GPS System Tracks Whereabouts of Pedophiles
Queensland’s (Australia) most notorious pedophiles have been caught lying about their whereabouts and meeting other child-sex offenders after being fitted with new GPS trackers in December of 2011.
The new GPS system, costing $13.7 million, triggered 287 alarms last month, 53 of which were serious enough to follow-up on. This lead to several breaches, which authorities acknowledge wouldn’t have been detected so quickly, if at all without the help of the new GPS tracking system.

Regina Cab Drivers Need GPS Technology
According to a statistical report, taxi cab drivers were rated as one of the most dangerous jobs in Canada. It shouldn’t come as a surprise since the nature of the job requires taxi drivers to pick up and drop off complete strangers all throughout the day for 8-12 hours straight. In August of 2009, Jose Pena-Seguira, a New York City cab driver, was fatally shot in the head.
However, this hasn’t stopped Ayyaz Destdar from doing his job. For 20 years Ayyaz has worked in large cities such as New York, Toronto and Edmonton. He recently moved to Regina, which is the capital city of the Canadian province of Saskatchewan, a few months ago and was surprised when he discovered how far behind the city was in the development and implementation of safety measures for taxi drivers.

Open Source Development for Real-Time GPS Tracking System
New York City’s public transit provider, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, is set to pour millions of dollars into a high-tech project that will give New Yorkers a real-time view into the exact location of every single bus in the city.
Last year, the transit authority announced “BusTime,” a pilot project on the B63 bus route running through Brooklyn. GPS tracking devices were installed on each bus, and an open-source firmware was initially developed by local tech firms to allow the public to view buses as they made their way along their routes.

Houston…We’ve Got a Solution
The City of Houston’s Metro (Metropolitan Transit Authority)Â mass-transit bus system is currently developing a smartphone application, entitled Houston T.R.I.P, which stands for Transit Route Information and Planner.
This mobile application, if implemented correctly, could help Houstonians navigate a bus system that’s as complex and expansive as the city it serves. Due to the sheer size of the city, the Metro bus system can be enigmatic to many of its residents. Even regular riders can be frustrated by the way schedules can be anything but predictable, making it difficult to use Metro to get to jobs, schools or anything that requires punctuality, especially during off-peak hours.
