Teen Challenges Ethics of GPS Tracking
7. What type of complaints do you get about GPS devices from teenagers?
I recognize that some teenagers see these devices as intrusive. Surprisingly, we do not get direct complaints from teenagers.
8. Approximately how many GPS devices are used without the driver’s knowledge?
We sold more than 24,000 tracking devices worldwide last year alone. I cannot say how many devices are being used covertly because we do not know how each device is used.
9. What type of issues arise when the person being secretly tracked discovers the device? How is this situation addressed?
I would imagine that this response would vary. If we are contacted by someone who claims to have been tracked, we recommend that they contact local authorities to see if any laws were violated. Laws vary from state to state so I cannot specifically address how this would be handled in your state. It is the responsibility of the user to use the device in accordance with all laws.
10. How are parents advised to deal with this privacy issue without causing discontent amongst their family?
As I identified above, GPS tracking devices can be a valuable tool for parents. I believe it is common wisdom among teenagers that parents are only interested in spying or intruding in their lives. I held these same opinions as a teenager yet find myself a parent of two teenagers obviously years later.
You would have to agree that teenagers divulge much more information on MySpace and most parents are unaware until they hear about it. I constantly hear and talk to other parents about information found on MySpace. I can guarantee discontent occurs in much greater numbers by this method than any tracking device. This also exposes children under that age of 18 to anyone who wants to get information off of MySpace.Â
In conclusion……..
I think it is clear that you are not in favor of this technology. However, I am sure that when your time comes to raise your own children, there will be a dynamic shift in the parental perspective as most parents experience. As a new parent, you want to provide safety and security for your child and would protect them at all cost. As this child becomes a teenager, they become more independent and do not want the control factors that they were so used to as a child.  As a parent, we do not want to let this sense of security pass as we recognize that life experiences are not fully understood during the teenage years. This becomes a power struggle and I believe teenagers can misinterpret this as controlling and an invasion of privacy; even when a tracking device is used. I truly believe that the significant majority of parents using this device are truly concerned about the welfare of their children.Â
I am actually glad to hear that you would take on this subject. However, consider everything mentioned within this email as the dynamics of this issue goes well beyond the technology. I hope this is helpful.
Regards,
Steve
