Fast and Furious

"Desperate times call for desperate measures." This statement has been used to justify both noble and not so noble acts.

Some have used this statement to justify potentially illegal activities for the sake of survival. In the famed musical, "Les Miserables," the main protagonist Jean Valjean was imprisoned for stealing a loaf of bread in order to feed his sister's starving child. The antagonist, a police inspector who goes by the name, Javert, has built his sense of morality and ethics on the strict observance to the law. His overly-aggressive adherence to the law, however, leads to internal battle within himself as he attempts to reconcile what's truly right and wrong.

Social Media is Watching You

Social media has exploded in the past 5 years. It's not longer just about Facebook and Twitter anymore, people are connecting with others via Google Plus, Pintrest, Tumblr and Instagram.

One of the big reasons for the rise and popularity of social media is the fact that more and more people are ditching their old cellphones and adopting the newest smartphones, such as the iPhone, Droid and Samsung Galaxy S line. Businesses large and small are also beginning to leverage social media to target consumers. It's not uncommon to see ads pop-up on our Facebook and Twitter feeds. Choices, Choices

One the hallmarks of living in a consumeristic society is the ability for the general public to choose. This right, however, can also be seen as one of the downfalls of consumerism.

If we're hungry, we have a myriad of choices when it comes to food. We can choose an ethnic preference, such as Chinese, Mexican, or Italian. We can narrow it down further based on genres, such as fast food, casual, or formal. We can narrow our choice it even further based on specific personal criteria, such as organic, vegetarian, gluten-free, etc.

However, with all these choices, it's oftentimes difficult to actually come to a decision quickly.

Advance Australia Fair!

Australia, the land down-under. Birthplace of famed actors Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Nicole Kidman and the legendary rock group AC/DC. It's the place where the cute and cuddly kangaroos and koalas call home; where Vegemite and Fosters abound; and let's not forget the late-great Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin.

Australia is also known as a country that loves their rugby. The game is fast-paced and hard-hitting, similar to American football, but without the pads and helmet. And now it looks like the sport of rugby will be getting some technological upgrades, which may help reduce injuries and accurately measure players' performance.

We're More Connected Than We Think

This past week, President Obama's administration came under scrutiny after it was discovered that the FBI and NSA were allowed to secretly collect personal information from millions of Verizon customer phone calls. The Administration has defended the data-mining, arguing that it's a necessary protocol in protecting national security.

However, privacy advocates have pushed back, saying that this violates the protections granted under the Fourth Amendment against search and seizure. The data collected from these calls contain extremely personal and private conversations, which can paint a revealing picture of a person's life.

GPS Tracking Considered in New York Court

To Track or Not to Track

Employee theft costs businesses billions of dollars in losses each year. According to the Department of Justice, nearly one-third of all employees commit some form of theft from their companies, and the figures have grown especially during the recent economic downturn (see Infographic below).

Employee theft not only cuts into bottom-line revenues and profits, it directly affects the other workers who don't steal or engage in theft. Oftentimes, new policies and systems are put into place, adding further restrictions, inconveniences and ultimately stress to other workers. This also affects future hiring for business owners and employers, as some are less inclined to hire new workers as a result of lost revenue and trust.

San Francisco Airport Worker Caught Stealing

Baggage Handler Caught Red-Handed

Personally, I've always been a little wary of the baggage claim areas at Airports. Everyone's luggage is out there in plain sight and anyone can simply grab a random bag from the carousel and leave without the owner suspecting anything.

Some travelers pack expensive items, such as clothing, shoes and even valuable electronics, in their bags making them prime targets for thieves. In their eyes, the bigger the bag, the better, since it means they can score stuff. And this is precisely the reason why I try not to check-in any bags whenever I fly - not to mention the ridiculous fees that airlines now charge for check-ins.
